How to Manage Streaming Free Trials
Without Getting Charged

A six-step system for watching months of streaming content for free, safely.

Updated 27 March 2026

1

Make a list of services you want to trial

Write down which streaming services have content you want to watch. Prioritise by content: if you have a specific series to finish, start with that service. Create a simple spreadsheet or note with: service name, trial length, monthly price, and your planned start date.

2

Start trials one at a time, not all at once

The biggest mistake people make is starting multiple trials simultaneously. If you sign up for four 7-day trials on the same day, you only get 7 days of free viewing. If you start them sequentially (finish one, start the next), you get up to 28 days. Stagger your start dates by the trial length of each service.

3

Set a calendar reminder immediately after signing up

As soon as you start a trial, set a calendar reminder for 3 days before the trial ends. Three days gives you enough time to decide whether to continue or cancel. A 48-hour reminder is often too late if you are busy. Most streaming services do not email you a reminder.

4

Cancel through the service website, not just the app

Deleting an app from your phone does NOT cancel your subscription. You must cancel through the service's account settings page on their website. If you subscribed through Apple, cancel via Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions on your iPhone. If you subscribed through Google Play, cancel via Google Play Store > Subscriptions.

5

Save your cancellation confirmation

After cancelling, you should receive a confirmation email. Save this in a folder. If you are ever charged incorrectly, this confirmation is your evidence for a refund request. Most streaming services will refund the first charge if you contact support with proof you cancelled in time.

6

Use a virtual card for added safety

Many banks now offer virtual card numbers or single-use cards. Revolut, Monzo, and Privacy.com all offer virtual cards. Use a virtual card with a spending limit for streaming trials. If you forget to cancel, the charge will be declined. This works best for services that require a card to start the trial.
